Gartner predicts totally new software economy

In a press release, Gartner predicts a slight increase in EMEA IT spendings in 2013 by 1,4%).

What is especialliy interesting however, is their view on the drivers for future growth of the software market:

“By 2016, two-thirds of the workforce will have a smartphone or tablet device. (…) Traditional software providers will have to rewrite their applications for these tablet-based environments, and there will be a strong increase in software spending. Gartner estimates that EMEA IT spending in software will grow 3.1 percent in 2013, nearly reaching the $100 billion mark in 2016”.

Gartner also predicts that the convergence of cloud, mobile, social media and ‘big data’ will create a whole new economy and new jobs in the IT sector… with new skills required.

Mostly, I tend not to agree with what Gartner predicts, but this time I do follow their view completely  – as it’s rather based on sound analysis than just on end-user surveys.
